Brown Recluse [Loxosceles reclusa]

These Spiders are highly revered for their damaging bites. Just search the web for brown recluse spider bites and you will see why.

• The body of the Brown recluse is about 3/10 to 1/2 inch long.
• May measure larger with legs included in measurement.
• They have a fiddle shape marking on top.
• A bite from these spiders may cause infection and could take months to heal.
• Found in garages, firewood piles, and often living near humans, in bathrooms, bedrooms and closets, under furniture, behind baseboards, or in corners and crevices. They are most active at night people are sometimes bitten while asleep or when putting on clothes that have been stored from past seasons.

Black Widow Spider [Latrodectus mactans Fabricius]

The Black Widow is well known for its poisonous bite. This spider is easy to identify by the red hourglass on its underside.

• 1/2 to 1.5 inches long
• Build large webs
• Have a reddish hour glass shape beneath the abdomen.
• Considered to be the most venomous spider in the U.S.
• Remain in irregular, tangled webs for the most of their lives.

Wolf Spider [Lycosa carolinensis]

The wolf spider is very common here in North Texas. We get lots of calls were they have been mistaken for Brown Recluse spider.

• From 1/2 to 2 inches in length
• They do not spin webs
• Common in homes around doors, windows, house plants, basements, garages
• Not poisonous but bites can cause reactions

Hobo Spider [Tegenaria agrestis]

• Body can be up to ¾” in length
• Build funnel shaped webs
• Not normally found in North Texas

Texas Brown Tarantula [Aphonopelma hentzi]

Texas Brown Tarantulas are found throughout the southern U.S. They pose no threat to humans and are rarely encountered as these spiders prefer to burrow in grasslands.

• Live in Burrows but will nest in logs
• Can have more than four inches of leg span
• Adults can weigh as much as 3 ounces
• Mainly ground dwellers
